We first used Line 1 cattle in the early 1970's, purchasing from the joint Cooper and Holden sales and from the Fort Keogh Research Station at Miles City, MT. In 1988 we bought our 1st Canadian sire, 38X (pictured at left).
Ever since then we have bought both Line 1 and Canadian sires and dams, crossing these bloodlines to breed for the best of both.
Un-Measurable (Economic) Traits
Many factors are important in contributing to a productive and uniform cowherd. Selection through EPD's and level of performance is extremely useful, but un-measurable (economic) traits remain absolutely critical:
- Eye and bag pigment
- Disposition
- Correct udders and short teats
- Fleshing ability
Ridder Super Cow
The economic traits listed above contribute to the complete cow. Our requirements for our complete or Super Cow are:
- Calving ease. No help ever in lifetime.
- Perfect, problem-free udder.
- Red eyes and red bag pigment.
- Fleshing ability.
- Early calving.
- Dam of Distinction (DOD designated by Am. Hereford Assn). Most of our purchased and raised Herd Sires are from DOD's.
